Neural substrate of binocular coordination. My PhD work mainly focused on motor coordination of the eyes and its cortical substrate. We examined the interdependence of saccades and vergence systems for their triggering (Vernet et al., 2008a, b) and for the control of binocular coordination of single and reading saccades (Kapoula et al., 2008; Vernet et al., 2008c; Vernet and Kapoula, 2009; Vernet et al., 2011). We showed that binocular coordination is thus not only based on brainstem structures: for the first time, the existence of a cortical component, probably involving the vergence system, is demonstrated. These results open perspectives for rehabilitation of binocular coordination deficits.

Windows to cognitive functions. We conducted experiments using eye movements as windows to cognitive functions such as switching ability and preparation of reflexive and more voluntary eye movements (Vernet et al., 2009; Jainta et al., 2011; Kapoula et al., 2011a).

Neurophysiopathology. We used eye movements as tools and to explore cortical and subcortical networks in patients with dementia (Kapoula et al., 2010b; Kapoula et al., 2010c), tinnitus (Kapoula et al., 2010a; Yang et al., 2010b; Kapoula et al., 2011b; Lang et al., 2013) and in dyslexic children (Bucci et al., 2009; Yang et al., 2010a).
